Tinsukia Traders Receive Extortion Letters in Name of ULFA-I, Probe Launched

Several business owners in Assam ’s Tinsukia district received extortion letters issued in the name of the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), as per reports on Friday. According to the information available, around 10 traders in Doomdooma have allegedly received letters demanding money. The letters reportedly carry the names of individuals identified as Finance Secretary General Michael Asom and Assistant Finance Secretary Major Abhimanyu Asom, claiming to represent ULFA-I. The recipients have been asked to pay the demanded amount, though the exact sums mentioned in the letters were not immediately available. Following the receipt of the letters, the affected traders approached the police and reported the matter. The incident has prompted authorities to look into the authenticity of the communications and determine whether the letters were actually issued by members of ULFA-I or were part of an extortion attempt carried out by individuals impersonating the banned outfit. Police have begun examining the letters and other available evidence as part of their investigation. Authorities are also trying to verify the identities and claims mentioned in the communications and trace those responsible for sending them. The incident comes amid continued security concerns in parts of Upper Assam, where law enforcement agencies have remained vigilant against militant activities, extortion networks, and attempts to intimidate local residents and businesses.
