Duniya Vijay-Nagarathna marriage ends: High Court grants divorce, orders ₹2 crore alimony

The Karnataka High Court has granted divorce to actor Duniya Vijay and Nagarathna and directed the actor to pay ₹2 crore as alimony, taking into account Nagarathna and their three children as well as Vijay’s status and financial position. The long-running marital dispute between Sandalwood actor Duniya Vijay and Nagarathna has now reached a major legal conclusion. The Karnataka High Court has granted them a divorce, bringing their marriage to an end after years of legal proceedings and differences. A division bench comprising Justice D.K. Singh and Justice H. Shantibhushan passed the order. Along with allowing the divorce, the court directed Duniya Vijay to pay ₹2 crore as alimony to Nagarathna. While considering the matter, the court took into account the circumstances of Nagarathna and the couple’s three children. The bench also considered Vijay’s position as a public figure and his financial status while deciding the amount of alimony. Duniya Vijay and Nagarathna got married in 1999 and have three children. Their marital dispute first reached the court in 2013, when Vijay approached the Family Court seeking divorce. At that stage, Vijay had alleged marital cruelty and desertion against Nagarathna. Issues relating to the care and upbringing of their children also came up during the divorce proceedings. However, the couple later attempted to resolve their differences. In 2014, reconciliation efforts took place between Vijay and Nagarathna. After the two decided to resume their married life, Vijay withdrew his first divorce petition. The reconciliation did not permanently resolve the differences between them. Problems reportedly resurfaced in their relationship in the following years. Two years later, in 2018, a dispute took place between Nagarathna and Keerthi. Following these developments, Vijay once again sought to end his marriage with Nagarathna. On October 29, 2018, Vijay filed a second divorce petition before the Family Court in Bengaluru. In this petition too, marital cruelty was cited as a major ground for seeking divorce. The second round of proceedings continued for several years. On June 13, 2024, the Shantinagar Family Court in Bengaluru dismissed Vijay’s divorce petition. The Family Court held that the allegations of cruelty made by Vijay against Nagarathna had not been sufficiently established before the court. Vijay subsequently challenged the Family Court decision before the Karnataka High Court. The matter eventually came before the division bench of Justice D.K. Singh and Justice H. Shantibhushan. The High Court has now granted the divorce and ordered Vijay to pay ₹2 crore in alimony to Nagarathna. In arriving at the decision, the court considered the future and circumstances of Nagarathna and the couple’s three children, along with Vijay’s status and financial condition.
