Vande Mataram and the limits of compulsory patriotism

The issue is not whether Vande Mataram deserves respect. Its historical role in India’s freedom struggle is undeniable. The deeper question is whether a democracy can require citizens to express patriotism in a particular religiously inflected form when doing so conflicts with their conscience or faith.
